St. Petersburg has many churches and cathedrals, but one church, in particular, is world-renown for its beauty and significant history. The Church of Our Savior on the Spilled Blood was built between 1883 and 1907 on the site where Emperor Alexander II was fatally wounded in March of 1881. The church’s walls and ceilings are covered in incredibly detailed mosaics, designed and created by the most prominent Russian artists of the day. The church was closed for services in the 1930s and reopened in 1997 after thirty years of restoration.
