The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was built by the order of Emperor Alexander I as a symbol of gratitude to God for saving Russia in the Patriotic War of 1812 and in commemoration of the Russian army’s victory over Napoleon. Construction of the Cathedral began in September of 1839 and took more than 44 years to complete with the help of voluntary public donations. During the Communist era in 1931, the Cathedral was pulled down and replaced by an open swimming pool. In the early 1990s, a public fund was established to raise money for the costly project of its rebuilding. The Cathedral is a statement of the re-establishment of power and prestige of the Orthodox Church and one of Moscow’s most impressive ecclesiastical buildings.
